11. Christ Church And Rectory

CHRIST CHURCH AND RECTORY

Built in 1880, this is the oldest church on Kent Island. It is the fifth church of this Christ Church parish founded in 1631. Previous church buildings were in nearby Broad Creek, one of the first towns established in Maryland. The church is superb example of the Queen Anne style of ecclesiastical architecture. The Vestry of Christ Church purchased this portion of the Stevens Adventure in 1866 for $2,800 from Charles and Mary Goodhand Stevens. The church is on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1865 Charles Stevens was “elected to make the necessary arrangements for a parsonage” for the new church. He chose an existing house next door to the new church that previously had housed a boarding school for boys and a day school for young ladies.

Christ Church is open for touring on the 1st Saturday of the month from April through November. For more details call 410-604-2100.
